Sunlight on the Snow, Froggatt Edge

Froggatt Edge is one of the gritstone Derbyshire edges, which run from Ladybower Reservoir all the way along the Derwent Valley to Chatsworth.

It is a brilliant place to walk in the snow on a winter afternoon as the sun lowers. The edge is about 300 metres high, so with the right weather conditions, the late afternoon light can fill the woods with a warm glow.

On this November afternoon, as I approached the edge of the wood, the trees began to thin and the open moors dominated the view. The sun was just beginning to set and I found this group of silver birch trees silhouetted against the warm sky. The sunlight casting long shadows on the snow provided me with a fascinating snow subject.
